Mother Love

Are you being a good mother – to you?

Most of us don’t ever think about or even consider being a mother to ourselves – just might be a good thing to remember to do. I wrote about this in “Who’s Pulling My Strings,” but like so many things, I find I often forget the words of wisdom when I most need them.

Writing in my journal this week, sorting through an issue that was bothering me, it dawned on me that the child in me needed to have her hand held and to hear words of comfort. She needed mother love to bring her back to remembering the truth of who she is instead of what she was telling herself in that moment.

I believe we all have times when we need to feel mother love.

Here’s the secret to getting the mother love you want and need – it can only come from you. Only you know what you are feeling and what you need. Only the mother within you can provide the love and wisdom that will make it better.

What does this mother love we want look like?

I’m not suggesting we necessarily use our birth mother for our model. Some were more or less perfect than others. At the time I raised my children I told myself I was the best mother – and, like all mothers, at the time I was doing the best that I could. Looking back on that time now, I see many ways I wish I had known what I know now and been able to do it differently – better.

Make a “to do” list for the
mother love you want and need.

If we are at all alike you, too, need reminders now and then about good mothering. Here are a few things the wise and loving mother in me, along with the input of the child within came up with that the child needs:

  • Remind me that I am lovable and loved no matter what.
  • Teach me to give time and attention to what my body, mind and spirit need.
  • To stop judging and comparing me to others.
  • Stand by my side and hold my hand when something scares me.
  • Teach me how to love and protect me and feel safe no matter what is happening.
  • How to make choices that are for my “highest good.”
  • How to say “no” and feel innocent.
  • How to feel innocent and ask for what I want – from others and myself.
  • How to focus my attention and energy on all the good in my life and pay no attention to what I don’t have.

Now that I am remembering to mother love me, I am so appreciating having her stand by my side and hold my hand. I feel ever so much better.

May you find your inner Mother alive and well, standing by your side and holding your hand. Happy Mother’s Day!
